  • My 2013 THP 155 engine needs to be replaced :@

A couple of weeks ago I got a fault code from the engine, the dealer gave me a quick software update, but of course that wasn't the solution, because a week later I had it again: engine fault message on screen, loss of power, fan blowing full power... Dealer said they would check it on the scheduled service last week.
So, what seems to be the problem? Where to begin.. Timing chain is streched, massive carbon build up (mechanic showed me on camera), axle of turbo sits loose, HPFP,... Long story short, it needs a new engine. Cost €7600 (warranty is only 2 years here). This car just had it's 3rd birthday last week, and has only 41000km on it. I think every person in the world agrees that no engine should fail so soon already. Since the car has had carbon build up twice and it's timing chain tensioner replaced in it's short life, I asked them what Citroen Belgium had to say about the matter. They hadn't contacted them yet, but will try this week. (I find it strange I have to specifically asked them to do that) If Citroen doesn't acknowledge that there is a problem, I don't know what I have to do. If I sell the car, I won't get a lot for it anymore, and I still have to pay the installment plan for 2,5y without even having a car.
And to make things even worse, I just put on 4 new tires and front brake discs and pads the day before it's "service". They have literally only done the drive to the dealer (2km).
I'm gutted since however it'll turn out (if Citroen wants to pay a part of the costs or if I have to sell the car), it'll end up costing me a lot of money (I don't even have). That said, fingers crossed that Citroen will be reasonable.

Hard luck FLP. Hope luck stays with you from now on
If Citroen don't help, why not just put a used THP engine in, see how it goes?

So after not hearing a single word from the dealership for 2.5 weeks, I finally got a call yesterday to come by (after I send them a mail). You never guess what they told me. Just one sentence. "Citroen isn't doing anything to ease the costs, since it's out of warranty"
Are you f***ing kidding me?! That why I had to wait so long? So Citroen Belgium thinks selling an engine that only lasts 41.000km (26.000miles), and had it's fair share of problems since the beginning is normal?!
I really don't know what to do now. Paying €8000 for a new engine all by myself is no option, because first that's just insane for a little car like this, and second I can't get that amount of money together either. Selling the car isn't really an option either since I still have to pay the loan for the car for another 2.5y and I doubt I'll get enough money for the car as it is now to pay that loan back all at once.
What the dealership suggested was try to fix the current engine as best as they can, by getting the head cleaned (as they did twice under warranty) and replace the turbo,.... But that'll cost me a few 1000 euros too, and in a year I'll probably have the same problems with the engine again. (they had nothing to say when I told/asked them that)
So I'm in big trouble here. I have no idea what to do now. I still believe that selling an engine that lasts only 26.000miles shouldn't be allowed, right?

Do you have a consumer advice service in Belgium ? Somewhere that you can discuss this and get some advice as to next steps ?

I'd also try raising this with Citroen yourself, keep it polite and factual and see what they asay.

Very new around here so I'm no authority but if that was me I would be going direct to Citroen customer service. It is pretty shocking that they think it's ok for an engine to last 26,000 miles and then die.

I don't think we have a consumer advice service.
Yes, I think my next move is to try and contact Citroen Belgium myself. As you said, in a polite and factual way, to begin. I don't know what else I can try for now..

Good luck - I would start there too - set out all the facts, all the work that's been done, the service history etc and ask them to review the failure of the engine as you believe that it shouldn't have happened with so few miles and all the remedial work undertaken on it.

So sorry to hear this. I was with Liam when CUK called to say that his 3rd engine in his 2010 THP150 was not going to be covered by Citroen. He stumped the repair bill and sold the car back to CUK.

I'm with the guys above though in contacting Citroen yourself, only you can give them the information you need them to hear from the perspective of the owner and you can hear direct what they have to say and ask about solutions that best suit you both.

It's been brought up in the past about buying something fit for purpose and the consumer rights act. Might have some info online about how this relates to you.

Stef had 2 Racing's he rejected and quite a bit of communication with Citroen France. There might be some usefull reading in some of his threads.

Thx for the support guys! Means a lot!

I was trying to make a timeline of the work the engine has had before. But I'm not 100% sure what they did each time it has been in. Since warranty work was not written down in the service history of the car. (In the little book I mean) Nor did I receive a receipt of the work done, since it were warranty jobs. So it's very difficult to make such a timeline. :s Of course Citroen would have that data, but I myself have no proof my claims.

Normally you can request this from the Citroen dealer (even now) and they can print off a list of the work they did under warranty or as part of the service I think....
