  • Estimated Mileage - Diesel

    Evening guys,

New member here with a question if I may be so bold (that could just be me being a muppet)?

Love our Shark Grey and Black 2015 DS3 DSport+ (BlueHDI 120) and have been lurking in the shadows here for a while, but I have finally been coaxed into joining today.

I have just got back in from picking her up from the 1st service, and I noticed something odd (as mentioned, I could just be being a muppet). I filled her up with Diesel yesterday, and she was showing the average expected range as 571 miles (which is pretty standard)
I had, by the time I dropped her off at Citroen this morning done 19 miles. Hoever, I picked the car up and as I drove back I noticed that whilst showing a full tank, the estimated range had dropped to 469 miles!

I have had a full service (£220 - what's that all about!?!?!), they have replaced pollen filter, oil filter, Adblue top up, oil top up - 1L, and carried out a 'Citroen recommended' emmision control serviced (Fortron diesel treatment?!)

Having got home (now done 25 miles out of the full tank) I nipped and topped her up, thinking that it is simply fuel use - and it took me 7 litres to second click. Got in the car - still exactly the same estimated mileage.

So what have they done (excluding I guess, a Ferris Buellers style road trip)? I have just got off the blower and they believe that it is not registering the additional fuel as I need to add over 12 Litres.

I dunno, is this correct - could be a load of old hogwash lol - any ideas? As you will have correctly guessed, I'm not mechanically minded - but I can build and support a killer PC

    cheers

    Welcome out of the shadows!

I'm not sure if it bodes well for you that I am helping, if you have been watching a while you'll know my world is full on unicorns and glitter....

BUT. The MPG will be based on driving style, conditions etc. If they took her for a very quick Ferris Bueller, had the engine running or had her on the ramps it will impact what the car thinks it will get next. For example I can lose 12 miles just thrashing my diesel around a corner.

When you are going along the range will go up and down depending on the road, speed etc. Rather than drop a mile for each mile actually done.

I can fill up and it will say 510 miles lets say. Drive to the shops (around the corner), 470 miles. Then drive home and it will say 500 miles as it adjusts.

I wouldn't be surprised if on your next journey, the range goes back up again.

^ Exactly what WTF said was my experience also.... I never topped up small amounts as I read that it can mess with gauge and display....

Now that sounds like a pie to be proud of!!

But, less of my rumbling stomach, thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the advice. It's sort of what I was hoping - that following a main dealer service Citroën haven't actually nobbled her to the tune of a couple of hundred miles to the tank!

I did get to play with a new DS4 as a courtesy car (ugly on the outside, ooooooh comfy on the inside) and that had some brilliant toys. Liked the real climate control, the slidey sun visor is genius (we need those on the Goddess!), and above all, the Holy Grail - a single cup holder! (What is it with Citroën and their dislike of mobile beverages? We wouldn't necessarily be using it for a bottle of vin rouge...I miss my morning coffee)

So, I won't take it back just yet for them to give it a kick by removing a fuse or two, but will hold as per your advice, and see a)What it's like over the next week and b) What it does when I stick 20 quid in at the weekend.

        Ta :lemon:

Aha! (Not the 80's Scandy popsters) in which case I will refrain from bunging in aforementioned £20, and wait a tad longer

I had a DS3 for four years and normally topped up around the 500 miles mark (miles on that tank) unless you need to keep it fully topped up I'd drive it until the warning light comes on (with about 50miles to go).

I was driving it until one bar remained and then filled her up, which I did yesterday. I only topped her off today as the estimated range was so low...will have to see if it picks up any according to what WTF suggests.
Also as is my first Weasel powered vehicle, I was a bit afraid of sludge in the tank if I go too low?!

Best to disregard the miles remaining figure, it's possibly useful if you are low on fuel and it gives you a rough idea.

                  Nooooooooooo

What sludge ? The tanks empty from the bottom by their very nature, if you accept that, it's difficult to understand how the sludge remains sat at the bottom of the tank until you go below 1 bar left on the gauge

I did it for three straight years with mine (never an issue).

It is true small fill ups like that will not register. There is also a mention of this in your handbook.

The pick up is located slightly ABOVE the bottom of the tank. So yes it is possible to have crap on the bottom.

If that's so I stand corrected and bow to the cyclone (again ) That said I did run mine to pretty much dashes on the display several times and always to less than 30miles to go (fuel stations allowing) and never experienced any issues.

Why would the pick up be just above the bottom though ?

exactly this and water that will sit on the bottom also, + it just makes sense to do it like that when the pump is inside the tank.

Well, what a beautiful morning. Rain, and an overall greyness that will pervade your soul should you let it, but, IT'S SATURDAY!!

Just wanted to say thanks for the replies, here been driving like and aged french nun in a 2CV, and the mileage did go up. The sluggishness I had felt seems to have abated as the week went on, but this could simply have just been my perception in the first place anyway. As for the weasels, i'll make sure they never run too low. So, once again, cheers gang
