  • Lack of power in my 165 THP

    Hello, guys.

I am an owner of a '12 Citroen Ds3 with a thp 165 engine. I bought it used, march past, from an old woman, with no sons to blow the car away, with 18k miles.
The info i have is that she only drove this car from home to job and vice versa. Travelled with it 2 times. Made a test drive, took it in two mechanics to evaluate
any mechanical problem, and nothing was found. Both said the car was OK, so i bought it. First week i got it, it started that rattling noise when i start the engine
by the morning (i already know about the timing chain issue, and i will buy the parts i need to change ASAP. i managed to discover about it just few days ago).
Trusting in the mechanics, i thought it was any kind of heating procedure of car, since it last just a few seconds. Note: I still use the car just to go to work and back,
and other small routes. Also, made a 800 miles travel with it.

Sure as the engine was working fine, i started to make some mods in it. Now the car has a Stg 2 remap, 2.5' downpipe, Cold Air Intake with a K&N universal filter,
and a GFB Diverter Valve. At first the car where really good, very fun to be driven, but when i changed the spark plug to another model(NGK LAser Platinum LKR8AP),
as a recomendation by the guy who made the remap, it started to get "lazy". (the spark plugs are one heat range higher[9] then the OEM[8]).

I drove with these spark plugs for about 2-3 weeks, then i put the OEM back. Still it is slower then before, only mpg increased, and i dont feel any boost at all.
(Note: after this changes [remap, downpipe, etc.], the turbo was kicking really nice @2500-3000 rpm). Then i started to check on Torque Pro any fault codes, or any
difference in the operation of the turbo, air pressure, high pressure pump, and everything seemed fine.

Now i want ask you guys: what is possibly making my car lose that amount of power? Is the timing chain responsible for all that loss of power? Or this + any
build up could affect that much the car's performance?

I wander if it's suffering from a carbon build up and in need of a walnut blast. Search the forum for more posts on walnut blasting.

Thanks for the advice! I really thought about it. The thing is, and I forgot to mention it: i'm from Brazil, and GDI cars are a relatively new here, and expensive, so there arent many specialized technicians here. In the town i live, there is no such thing as walnut blast, so i'm researching everything i need, so i can give the instructions to the my mechanician. I already joined the DS3/THP owners club of Brazil, and even the most experienced owners didnt know about it. I came here to find better info about everything, specially about the timing chain issues, which worries me a lot, since i found it is a BIG trouble and my car have it. Anyway, i'll keep my research! If someone could share some technical info about the blast (how to do, any special equipment needed, correct air pressure, etc.), i appreciate.

Jamie at SP Tuning (forum member and fellow DS3 owner) would probably be the best bet to help as he has a walnut blasting machine and performs the cleans for owners who need them

Hahaha! thanks for the feedback, guys! So, i already found walnut shell pellets on sale here. Just need to find the right equipment and some technical stuff to do such work. Anyways, today i did a test in the car, and i realized it could be carbon build up. I gave 30% throttle and drove the car at the same gear. Reaching 3k rpm, the boost came in. Not as awesome as in full throttle (before this carbon build up, as told), but it kicked in. When it goes full throttle, i dont feel any kick at all. Feels like the turbo is there, but acting slower than usual.

I cleaned the valves myself. I removed the inlet manifold. And turnedbthe engine untill the valves closed, sprayed it full with carburateur cleaner. And let it soak for 5 minutes. Then used a little tube brush to clean the valves. Valves are like new again. Just don't forget to use airpressure to get all the stuff out (still with closed valves) and then open valves and use the sparkplug hole to get everything out...
Takes a lot of time and patience, but saved me a ton of money...

And het yourself a little endoscope to check your work! Otherwise there is no use in trying to clean them...
