  • Another Nutblast and my Cams Fondled

Was up at Jamies last monday as id noticed a slight drop off in power and and some very minor unevenness.

Id had the valves walnut blasted at 23k and im now on 40k so was interested to see the valves whilst not as bad as the first time in, were significantly covered. Also the camshafts needed to be (technical term??) realigned.

So really noticed a difference on the drive home, engine very smooth again and power delivery back to how i remember after the previous blast/map and new exhaust. Also got 50mpg on the drive back down the M1/M25.

Do you know by any chance what are the symptoms when camshaft realignment is needed? How is it done? Thanks.

This is my understanding not sure about the symptoms i know it can show high long term fuel trim but the sprocket that turns the cams is loosened off the cams realigned with a special tool & then the sprocket re-tightened as long as the chain hasn't stretched

Thanks for the explanation. I guess it is very common after the walnut blasting to check the long and short term fuel trims and if they are above acceptable tolerance of combined + - 10%.
It would be great if someone from members who has done camshaft realignment could explain in more details how it is done and using which tools.

It's the cams being out of line out of sync that causes the fuel trims to be out of tollerance, mine were way out fluctuating wildly before i had it reset, the just slip over time with there being no keyways on the sprockets & cams,i know jamie offers a free check with a walnut blast & the tool is just a jog to get the cams lined up correctly before re tightening the bolts have spoken with jamie about this numerous times & the process involved,i think mine are out again after having it done about 18 months ago by citreon under warranty
