  • Fuel warning light VS. Trip computer

So i take the DS3 on a lot of long distance journeys but try and avoid filling up at the expensive motorway services. This means i normally plan my fill ups so i can avoid this and also know a rough range so im not filling up on the rush to work or at 2am!

the trip computer helps massively giving me an estimated range, which is good if it works!

the problem i had is that with 60 miles left of my journey the computer said i had 65 miles range, not wanting to fill up on the motorway at 2am i was happy except the fuel warning light appeared, buzzing at me every 2 or so miles, giving me the 'fuel too low' warning.

To be fair i had done 530 miles from fill up as the light first appeared, which is not bad for a HDi 90 with less than 2000 miles on it. Anyhow scared of being stuck and ruining my new engine i found a petrol station.

So anyhow the point of all this is that the trip computer seems to think i can go 65 miles on vapours, so it probably shouldn't be trusted!

Anyone get close to the estimates or know how far the reserve will go?

From my experience the low fuel warning comes on when there is around 5 litres left in the tank and usually one bar left on the tank display.
If I were on the motorway with that situation I would bowl into the next service station and put 5 litres in, enough to get home and to a petrol station with more acceptable prices

      Just Wondering...

The Distance Indicator Goes Down To 18 Miles Then Gives The Infamous ''------''

I've Done An Extra 10 Miles After The ''------''

Anyone Else Run Out Or Gotten Far ?

Nearest I've been was a couple of weeks ago, on along motorway journey. When we set off for home the trip computer was showing about 20 miles range over the distance the sat-nav showed, a difference which stayed consistent enough for me to not bother filling up on the motorway.

The low fuel light came on about 15 miles from home; right up to the point the trip computer gave up giving a range reading I'd still got that 20 mile cushion. When I filled up I put 46.7 litres in - not bad for a tank with a nominal capacity of 48 litres!

I find the trip computer pretty accurate - the trip computer figure I get for a fill-up is normally within 2% of the actual figure, normally on the optimistic side, but I've had a couple of fill-ups where the trip computer figure has been lower than the actual consumption.

On a modern diesel engine when you are running very low on fuel the engine management system will omit a 'misfire' to tell you have you really need to fuel up!!

Take it none of you guys play 'Fuel light bingo' then???
