I have Nokian WR D3s - if the Finns can't get it right then there's not much hope!

Subjective test yesterday on snow and ice on my way to mountain biking in the Peak District - fantastic, traction excellent and stopping distance about half that of my OE Bridgestones

Our Sedici has Vredestein Snowtrac 3s which are also excellent even though they are now doing their third winter

I would go for something with a tread pattern that looks like it would provide traction when conditions get dire - i.e, transverse grooves

Mytyres is a good source but they are in Germany - my (16" recommended by the site) wheels with tyres took nearly four weeks to get here

hi, both your tyres get excellent reviews but are expensive at about 180 quid each. I am only keeping the can another year so dont want to spend a bomb on them. Jimbob never heard of them what are yours like?

195/55/16 WR D3s are £80ea delivered - use steel wheels and keep you alloys corrosion free.

You might be able to use that size on your next car - if not ebay them

They are googlable but I am not very good at posting links. Treadwise they are a bit like --w-- if that makes sense!
Performance wise I am comparing them to last year when I had second hand Bridgestone Blizzacks and Pirelli Snowstorms (or snow somethings). Subjectively I can't notice a difference and I work in Macclesfield including trips up in the hills.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with winter tyres as I don't believe we have bad enough conditions, often enough, to justify the expense. I had to replace the front tyres on my DS3 at about 19,000 miles (I'm a driving instructor) and settled for a fairly basic tyre with an asymetric tread pattern. Cost me £120 for two, supplied and fitted.

On a recent trip in a blizzard a couple of weeks ago, I found the grip was good. The ESP helped me up inclines with ease, whereas other vehicles were struggling. I think as long as you've got some tread, with the correct pressures (v. important!) I'd save the dosh for a winter holiday!

                Happy Christmas all!

If your keeping the car long term your really not saving by staying with the summer tires all year, Remember your tire wear is also cut in half with 2 sets of tires

This left me puzzled. I must admit I wondered where you picked up that 'special' bit of logic....(and spelling/grammar).

Anyway - would winter tyres not wear out quicker on a non-icy or snowy road, than 'regular' tyres? back to my point - conditions in this country don't warrant the extra expense. In my own opinion, of course!

This is not a f n spelling bee why do you want to start deriding people you have your view I have mine Its christmas stop acting like a little boy on the schoolyard- in my opinion.

By the way winter tires are not just for snow the rubber compounds are designed for the cold weather unlike summer tires or doesn't it get cold in tropical Scotland.

What about the all weather tyres? What are the Potenzas? are they all weather or summer?
If you read all the reviews and articles about winter tyres, they do say they are worth it, especially if we have a bad winter. Anyway I only have to survive this winter as I am getting my mates golf gtd in DEC 12 so might brave it out and see what the weather does?

Ooh Cyclone - you're a grumpy whatsit, aren't you? Your view is non-sensical, but I respect the right you have to post it. And tyres is spelt tyres, not tires. As for the weather in 'tropical Scotland', it does not get cold enough, often enough, to justify the expense of winter tyres. But it DOES get cold up here sometimes, you know. Do you actually know where Scotland is?
