Not getting into this personal sh*t but winter tyres are generally misunderstood....perhaps the manufacturers should style them cold weather tyres

It certainly does in Derbyshire - the majority of my journeys recently have been at under 7C - which is 'winter tyre' territory....add in the wet conditions and they make even more sense.

Latavala in Ireland found the same thing

While Hirvonen opted for Pirelli’s standard soft compound PZero tyre this morning, such were the conditions that Latvala chose the Sottozero winter tyre for his Focus RS WRC. The rewards were instant and Latvala stormed through the opening Glenboy special stage more than 17sec faster than anyone else and a stunning 42sec quicker than world champion Sébastien Loeb.

Hirvonen switched to the winter tyre this afternoon and consolidated third, 64.8sec from the lead and with a comfortable two minute advantage over fourth-placed Henning Solberg. “I was happier than this morning because I was more confident with the tyres. Considering it was 7ºC and the roads were soaking wet, they worked amazingly well for a winter snow and ice pattern

I have tyres I use in the winter, they are on the land rover, lol

Seriously though we all had a standing start on a very muddy hill at the WRC and we all pulled away easily.

As for tropical Scotland it,s a lot easier than a German winter

Anyway - would winter tyres not wear out quicker on a non-icy or snowy road, than 'regular' tyres? back to my point - conditions in this country don't warrant the extra expense. In my own opinion, of course!
2 set's will last twice as long as one set, don't you agree?

Two sets will also cost twice as much (roughly), so half the wear (of both sets) is the same as having just one set of tyres, no? So the logic of having two sets of tyres because it cuts one's tyre wear by half is slightly skewed, it would seem to me.

Why do you insist on taking such perverse delight in misinterpreting what Cyclone originally said? Even a moron in a hurry would have realised that he was simply making the point that running a set of winter tyres doesn't cost more overall, because it reduces the rate of wear on the summer tyres.

Can we now please bring this tiresome point-scoring to an end?

I take such perverse delight because he's an idiot. Also, your comment above has had the effect of getting you tarred with the same brush.

                        Jesus.....

Who would have thought that something as simple as tyres was cause such a fuss.

Anyway my thoughts have always been that you as the driver will know if an investment into winter (cold) tyres is worth for you or not. Thats going to depend on the kind of winter weather you experience on a regular basis and the kind of driving you do. As Owd Git said his has quite bad weather and does a bit of driving so winter tyres are a good idea where Big TC feels that the weather is milder and therefore doesn't require them. It's all down to a matter of choice.

Look at it this way, we don't all wear welly boots all year round but dig them out when the snow is on the ground as we know they keep our feet dry.

Well just hoping weather doesn't get bad, so won't need to buy them.
