  • Oil catch can questions

    Hello Guys,

signed up for this forum just a few minutes ago, since the car seems to be quite rare in germany and I didn’t find any detailed information in any major car forum. So, I will get my DS3 cabrio in a few days and have enough time to read a lot about all its problems, mainly its THP155 engine. I knew about its problems before buying, so I will not complain, it was a lot of fun during the test drive, so I bought it nevertheless. I think, there is not much to do about the chain-problem except regular oil changes, but the oil vapour problem can be solved easily with a catch can (like some of your guys did). But since you can’t find anything about these in german car forums, I still have some questions left on that topic:

Most builds I have seen have the catch can on the front outlet of the engine. But there is a second one in the back – is it necessary to put a second can on that outlet? Or can it be blocked with the plugs from the THP200 engine (I’ve heard that some people do that, but I’m not sure this is a wise choice – some even plug up both crankcase outlets)? Will blocking one outlet send all the vapour trough the outlet with the catch can, or are those two separated systems, so one will not be vented anymore? And finally, I have no idea how to attach the hoses to the outlet. I’ve seen some videos on youtube with mini coopers and it seems you screw in new fittings? But where to get them? Since the same (?) engine was used in the mini, would a set made for the mini fit my DS3?

    Hi and welcome.
Yes, you can fit a rear PCV catch can, although reinforced tubing has to be used from what I recall. It will help certainly, but I never got around to fitting one. My advice when buying a catch can would be a good quality one, with a sight tube- for the front at least

I fitted one to the front PCV, and used a couple sizes of tubing, or fitted a reducer, 19mm outlets from the can I believe, then 25mm on one of the outlets, but as its a few years back I can quite remember tbh. Think Ive a few photos of my front catch can fitted, somewhere.

PCV delete caps were all the rage in the 12 months from 2010 petrol models, then it became apparent they didn't help the engine, and may have caused negative effects (I still have the PCV delete caps that were never fitted)

Call/ contact Jamie at SPTuning in Leicestershire as he may be able to comment, or certainly search this forum for old posts (He fitted both front and rear catch cans)

The Mini THP engine is the same base lump, not sure if all the fittings are the same

Search the forum, there is a big argument between me and czar on the topic. First, deleting the back one works, but only on certain valve covers. New ones are different and don't need alot of suction to open the front valve inside the cover, still, at low rpm the suction is not high enough to open it. That's why the back pcv exists, this closes on turbo pressure.
In my opinion the underpressure on the front one is to high and sucks the vapours through the occ to fast for it to be effective. That's why mine vents to air...

Read the forums and make you're own mind up, don't let people tell you what to do.

Thanks for the answer. Venting to air is not an option, I think even adding a catch can is illegal in Germany but tolerated, but emission and environment laws are very strict, even with a filter, venting oil vapour out of the car could get me in serious troubles I believe. I will start by adding an catch can to the front outlet, since it is way easier to access. I’ve seen a tutorial on youtube, where the hose is not removed, but cut and brass fittings from garden hoses are fitted in. So I don’t need to screw in new parts into the crankcase.

I guess I’ll try that first. Maybe I can add another can on the other side later. Hopefully one can in the front will help to reduce the amount of carbon build up and extend the milage between the walnut-cleaning...

In my experience, I suggest avoiding essay services that rely on ChatGPT for writing resumes and cover letters. The AI-generated content may lack the human touch and fail to capture the essence of an individual. To ensure quality, I always use an AI word detector & Chat GPT Content Detector to verify the originality and authenticity of the essay.
