I knew that it was an option but was surprised that the lights do seem to have some sort of "auto" function even without that pack

Switching the lights off when the key is removed is, I think, part of the battery-saving strategy which Citroen has taken almost to the level of paranoia! The "auto" function is quite separate from that - it switches the headlights on when the engine is running & ambient light falls below a pre-set level.

if I leave the switch on side lights and take the key out and open the door the car beeps to tell me something (presumably that the light switch is still on) but the side lights are not illuminated.

the handbook makes a passing reference to this sidelight/parking light facility but i wonder if it is only in certian countries or part of the configuration of the individual car?

thanks again in anticipation of any help/information.
yes - well that is the case with my standard, no extras THP150

Just arrived home with the headlights on - switched the engine off and all the lights extinguished without moving the light switch. Withdrew the key and switched the lights off and then the sidelights back on, a bleeper sounded whilst the door was open. Locked the car as normal and the sidelights remained on - for at least 10 minutes, I have not tried any longer yet

The Highway Code has this to say about parking lights

223: All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph.
        Law RVLR reg 24

I'd be surprised if Citroen was producing a vehicle that could not comply with this, or could only manage it for 30 minutes!!!

That is true but it made me think, i've not seen a single vehicle parked along the A2 or A13 with parking lights on. not good really, is it.

this is getting really weird because I agree with you that I thought the ability to leave side lights illuminated, on a parked car, was a legal requirement - but the brand new 1.6 VTI DStyle that I have got does not seem to have this ability.

I will email my selling dealer and perhaps Citroen UK to ask them if this facility should be available.

            any other thoughts/comments from anyone?

            thanks in anticipation.

Huh? yeah, of course it does - especially when you live in a rural area without street lights and 30 limits

I tried Owd git's solution to the parking light issue, with lights on switched off engine and removed key, then turned lights off and back on to sidelights, bleeper sounded until door was shut. Locked car and lights stayed on.
No idea how long they would stay on, maybe only until the Eco circuit kicked in, will try that some other time.
I think that changing the sidelight bulbs to LED's might be a good idea to reduce current drain if parking lights are going to be used for any long periods

tried your system and it works - so why do not Citroen explain this in the handbook?

                              thanks for your help.

Any idea how long the sidelights stay on for?

This sort of information is really important if you ever need to park on an unlit road. I'd feel a right muppet if I'd left my car with the sidelights on, only to return half an hour later to find it in pitch darkness with a cyclist impaled on the rear.
