It happens on mine whenever the road is all muddy and dirty or during winter; a wipe of the little circular detectors usually makes it ok.
When cleaning is needed the tone becomes constant .

Ah I must have a different head unit as I don't get that display ,just the beeps .

my car did the same, did get it fixed under warranty, but was a battle, had to phone citreon to verify it wasnt a moving part (haha) .
