Thanks Biggie that makes sense to me, will be good next time I fill up, probably got away with it as I don't ever fill up and then immediately park up, I always drive a bit from cheapest local main dealer petrol station before I get home or to work

        Basically correct good job!

I always fill until a click, then wait a moment and then for another click.

With all this talk of fuel gauges I thought I would just leave this here

Best not leave fuel too low- sucks crap into the engine
Don't like less than 100 miles of fuel me, but then I only use BP Ultimate so it can be a challenge sometimes LOL

I'm pretty sure my fuel tank drains from the bottom so any sediment (going back a few years now aren't we ?) would surely get taken through under normal conditions as the tank drained ? I once ran my Astra SRi CDTi out of diesel, no problems with it after that, started fine and ran fine....

The fuel will be sucked up from "near" the bottom and out of the top of the tank. Granted there will be a filter screen at the suction point, the normal fuel filter, probably another screen built into the high pressure pump and a screen at each fuel injector. Even after all those filters and screens injectors still become clogged so any dirt at all is bad. If there is any dirt at the bottom of your tank the lower you run your fuel level the higher the concentration of particles that have become suspended by fuel sloshing about will be.

Cheers cyclone, I honestly thought this was an issue with older fuels (maybe when I first passed my test 24 years ago ?), I routinely fill mine up and then run it to almost empty (maybe 20 miles left on the screen) and therefore think this will be less of an impact ? Or to put it another way, I have been doing this for years and no issues to date....

I won't even get into the new cleaner fuels etc that presumably have less crap in them ?

Sigh, I have done this for years and years Chris and never had an issue, think this is an old wives tale myself, I've started with a new DS3 and following this procedure where is the dirt etc coming from ? Surely you're more at risk if you never run the tank towards empty ?

As for the supermarket fuels, do you think Tesco have their own refineries ? Nope they are supplied by a Company call Greenergy who also supply most of the other supermarkets.... Again no issues here using these fuels, fuel snobbery is fine though.....

The petrol, diesel and biofuel supplier has seen its turnover grow from £60m in 2001 to £2.8bn this year, and supplies 7.9bn litres of fuel a year. Its customers include the major oil companies and supermarkets, as well as bus and logistics companies.
Maybe they supply some of your fuel too ?

This reminds me of when I worked at a bakery when I was a student.
On the slicing and wrapping machines I used to change the paper every so many loaves as ordered.
So we had Wonderloaf, Asda, Tesco, etc. All the same bread - different wrapper!

And knobs always argued that one was better than the other - must be, they paid more!!!

Fine- keep taking the fuel level to the lowest you can get in the tank. Very sensible
And I would sue if I found out BP Ultimate is standard supermarket fuel. Easy. Another red herring
