  • Expensive-sounding noises - any ideas what it might be?

Another tale of woe, but this time not THP-related...

So, driving home from work last night, in a fast-moving line of traffic, there suddenly appeared in the road - right in front of me - a very large, very dead dog.

Hit the brakes, but too late to avoid running right over it. There was some almighty banging & crashing from the underneath as I caught it more or less dead centre. Feared the worst straight away.

So, I've now got something rattling underneath, a pronounced whine when accelerating, and what can best be described as a grinding noise when starting off. Otherwise it drives fine (edit: just realised how stupid that last remark sounds). Looked underneath when I got home, and the only visible damage is a very cracked plastic sump-guard. No sign of any oil leaks.

Any ideas? The gearbox could well have taken a whack, along with the sump-guard, although there's no visible damage. Could an impact like that have damaged the gearbox internals? Or knackered a drive-shaft?

    Go on, make my day!

Oh no, sorry to hear that mate, if it was a big dog there isn't much room under the car for it to pass is there ?

If it were me I'd take it to a local mechanic you trust to look it over, my concern would be the unseen damage that might be causes to brake lines, radiators etc....

The very least I'd do is unclip the plastic sump guard and see what you can see with the car up on stands or ramps.

    Good luck

Unlucky Gar- I mean whys there a dead dog in the road.....weren't the owner around?
Take the owner to court (Do they still license dogs?)

Gearbox would have taken a whack and would make funny noises (As you said) same as the drive shaft (As you said)
Specialist check over needed methinks. Sounds expensive unfortunately

Yah would definitely take it to get checked out. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a bit of dog still there too.

Hmmm.. wouldn't fancy hitting something as solid as a large dog (even if, fortunately - though not for the dog, already dead!). As others have said, there's not much room under there.

I once hit a cardboard box in my DS3. It had blown into my path by the slipstream of the horsebox trailer in front of me and I had no time to react. Fortunately, being empty, the box did no damage but it made a helluva noise and came out the back smashed to bits.

At a guess, I would think that, if there's no oil leaking, the gearbox is unlikely to have been damaged internally (ie the external damage necessary to break anything inside would cause oil to leak). Could be a bent driveshaft? If you're lucky, maybe just a bit of damaged plastic undertray fouling a moving part - eg driveshaft?

Best of luck that it's something cheap!

Thanks, folks - I'll put it up on the ramps and see what's what.

I was surprised that it didn't catch the lip of the bumper - must have just cleared it.

            Fingers crossed!

I'm not sure if that statement is pure genius or complete lunacy.
