  • Disks, Pads, Track Rod End, Steering Arm... DIY?

Took my HDi 90 in for a service last week to find out the above needed replacing. I knew the disks needed doing soon and was hoping my recent brushing with a kerb only needed the alignment adjusting, unfortunately there is more to it.

I was quoted £190 for the disks and pads and £160 for both the TR and SA. Didn't think it was too bad but i hate paying for something I'm sure I can do myself (Never done anything more than change a wheel before though lol)

Anyway, I have a few questions...

Do i need the FACOM D.60A's to force the caliper pistons back? Or could i use a general tool to do it?

For a 10 plate HDi 90 which size disks should i be buying. 266mm or 283mm? Both come up for my registration at many suppliers.

The guide from big feets thread (Kudos to him) says the bolts removed should be replaced with new parts. Is there a kit with these parts in or does anyone have the sizes of them? Is this even necessary?

I can source the track rod end but I'm having trouble finding a steering arm. Does anyone know the part number for this?

Thanks in advance for any help

Sure you expected this comment...but in the nicest possible way- wouldnt it be better to get experts to do it, especially as its how the car stops and steers, and double especially as you are sort of inexperienced?

You shouldn't need a special tool to push the piston back - a big G cramp will do the job. The bolts are coated with a locking compound (similar to Loctite) so they should be replaced - most pad manufacturers will supply new bolts with a set of pads.

However, I'll echo Chris's comment - never work on safety-related items unless you're sure of what you're doing.

Its a time and motion fiscal study really, what would take you maybe two days to (hopefully) do correctly, will take an expert a few hours. It all depends what value you put on your time. And yes what has also been said ref stopping and changing direction, I much prefer to have at least some control over both.

You will still need to go to a shop to have the steering aligned if you do it yourself. For parts don't rule out your local Citroen dealer and they can give you the correct part numbers. As others have stated if you not sure what you are doing and can't get someone that does have the knowledge to help then a workshop might be a good idea. None of the work is very difficult but any mistakes here could have drastic consequences

front discs and pads are really easy, on mine you remove 6 bolts... 2 for the caliper, 2 for the carrier and 2 for the discs. 1 hour each side would be plenty enough time. It is the rears that are a bit more tricky as the piston has to be wound in, and they wind in opposite directions. if your unsure on what size your disc is take the wheel off and measure it.

            who quoted you those prices?

PM me your registration and i can have a look what size discs are already on your vehicle.

I'm thinking of making an appearance to one of these events but i need to sort the car out first. At the min its got electric tape on the side until its being repaired and need to refresh the decals.

Your car uses the 266mm disk.
