  • Tracking check

Although I had no reason to think that there was any problem, I've had my tracking checked today - this is something I consider as almost a routine maintenance operation.

When I picked it up the guy who did it said that it was quite a long way out, although he pointed out that their machine is so accurate that what looks like quite a long way out to them may in reality be only a very small amount.

It may be just psychological, but it does seem to be better - a slight tendency to follow road camber seems to have gone. Looking at the front tyres there is an almost imperceptible feathering on the outside edges.

A tracking check is well worth doing - even if the suspension hasn't been obviously damaged by hitting a pothole, heavy kerbing, etc., as the rubbers settle, bearings wear in, etc., in normal use, it will change.

Good to have a: "Nice cars these, there's a real quality feel to them" when you drop the car off!

Parking it on a kerb is the most common to throw the tracking out.

I always have mine checked at regular intervals and it's surprising it's almost always out. And ur right I get the feeling it drives better afterwards but then that might just be psychological lol

When it was pointed out the vehicle was about 6 month old on a 13 plate, they looked a bit sheepish

It's worth having the tracking checked at least once a year, it not a big job and is normally done within half an hour at any tyre centre.

The place that did mine usually charges £30 + VAT. Not that I paid that much . . . & got a quick check of the rear suspension geometry as well!

Wow that cheap. In here tracking costs minimum 70 euros and usually above 100 euros. So no, I don't do it every year. When getting new tyres or if the car seems that it needs it.

Like now I think it needs to have tracking checked (steering wheel is a bit off centre when driving straight). But when I bought it I complained how it wants to go left if I let go of the streering wheel but in the dealer they said it's normal. Basically the DS3 is very sensitive to the grooves on the road, or at least mine is.

If yours is veering to the left pmatil, it could be the brakes also?
The prices for work on cars in Scandinavian countries, often makes me wonder whether its worth travelling to UK to get work done?
Have a holiday at the same time?
Sort of save all the work up, and come over for a couple days to get it done

Haha Chris! Yeah I suspected the brakes too before I bought it (during test drive) but they checked them and no problems apparently. To get the groove sensitivity down they adjusted the engine mount (I don't know what's it called exactly).

If your steering wheel is off centre when going forwards I would say the tracking has either been knocked out of line or else adjusted poorly when the steering wheel wasn't clamped straight ahead.

I'd take it it somewhere that knows their stuff, show them the wheel is off centre and ask them to redo the tracking with the wheel straight.

Yeah maybe I'll ask the dealer this fall when I have my yearly service. Nothing noticeable wear on the tyres, btw.
