  • There are two locations to fit a catch can, for simplicity lets call them 'top' and 'bottom'. A catch can is easy to fit to the top but in my experience doesn't do a huge amount of catching (mostly moisture). Fitting a CC to the bottom is (so i am told) very tricky but does weald far greater results.
Since my last walnut blast i have run a CC at the top, used 98 RON fuel and done all the other things recommended to minimise the carbon build up but unfortunately the design of the engine being direct injection is always working against you.
Will be interesting to see the state of the valves when i get it blasted again.

    • I see, I'd have no idea where to begin fitting unless I'd seen one fitted, sounds like it may be more hassle then it's worth though?
I am searching around where I live (west London, Slough) to see if anyone does walnut blasting but so far only companies offering it for bmws,
I would go to Jamie's but he is about 2 hours away and I'm not sure it's a wait around type thing.
Anyone know of any other places that carry this work out? Prices seem to vary from 200 to 600 pounds!!

That will be interesting to see how many miles you get before you need another blast.
Do you know why the higher octane fuel is supposed to help if the fuel never comes into contac with the back of the valves?

There are some posts on here both endorsing and dismissing 98RON fuel. Im assuming it is cleaner burning so while that doesn't effect the valves directly, it may do as part of the overall process.

Same for me, i drop the car off early doors, go to Bodywize gym round the corner, walk into town for some lunch, walk back and pick up the car, enjoy the drive home knowing the car has been attended to by a professional.

I was under the impression it would take more then a day but if that's the case I'm happy to pay a days entry to the gym and I need some new socks :snowy0:
Will have to ring Jamie up and book it in

              • I had mine walnut blasted by Jamie & paid for by the dealer under warranty as it was cheaper when done by Jamie that the dealer could do it for themselves

                • Depends on how bad the carbonisation is, mine was pretty shocking and took Jamie most of the day to do.

                  • Hmm, I have just bought the car and have 6 months trade warranty.....I wonder if they'll do it under warranty. So far the garage I bought it from have been shit! But maybe it's worth asking. That would be awesome, then I could spend the money on a remap instead!

                      • Valve overlap is why using a premium fuel helps.

Not 100% what that is but I'll take all your words for it.

                          • Ive noticed a slight whining/whistling noise that changes with the rpm of my engine, it seems to cut in and out when I hit bumps in the road. Anyone ever heard of this?
Not used to the car yet, sounds odd to me. Car drives fine apart from the usual hesitation issue.

Could be loose ground wire, it's a common issue, should be fixed under warranty by your dealer.

                              • My dealer is pretty rubbish, is it easy enough to fix? Under bonnet? I'm going there tomorrow anyway maybe I'll run it past them.
