Took my car to the dealer today for the "screen update" recall, was reliably told it would fix my USB Stick issues. It failed 3 times on the journey home! Re-booked in for Monday

I use a SanDisk Cruzer USB which works flawlessly. Someone gave me cheap USB stick and and after a while it failed and when I checked it on my PC it wouldn't reformat, so in the bin it went.
My son has a hi-res Sony music player which we use via Bluetooth and that also works without any problems.

Every time I turn the engine on it tells me that the device has failed. I remove it and put it back in again and its totally fine for the whole journey
The problem only comes up when the engine is turned on (not just the electrics)
I had a 'device failed' message since I've had the car, but it wasn't very often, but since I had the screen software updated due to this recall last week, it happens every single time

Sorry for keeping replying to myself but I got my car back this afternoon after the dealer reapplied the software update and tried numerous USB Sticks, apparently they got mine to show the fault once, worked the rest of the time and every other USB stick they tried works perfectly.
I got in the car, turned it on - "Error - Device Failed"
I'm bored of it now

Its a Cruzer Fit 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive, purchased from the link earlier in this thread.
I re-formatted it last night and put a few songs on it in the root folder and it worked this morning, no "Error - Device Failed" messages, but I still get the problem where it randomly keeps playing while I'm listening to the radio and when I switch it to USB its half way through a song a few ahead of where I left it.
They just told me to try a few different ones and see how it goes

Okay, the reason I ask is we have had a few folks in with the same error and the issue has always been the same, the USB is loose in the socket. This is normally because the stick is one of those that has a plastic connector or slider part....I should never have doubted the Lord of Bacon!!

I'm a bit confused here now, have any of you been using these thumb drives (that have been working great for Beefy and I for a number of years) ?

Sounds like they're fobbing you off. In my opinion, it's either a hardware fault (most likely in the USB socket) or software issue and they're taking the easy route of blaming the USB drive instead of actually diagnosing the issue.

Yes, I use a 16GB one of those exact drives. I've also tried a USB drive that I was given from work (so not a branded one), and both had my original problem of coming up with the error or randomly skipping songs, but it only happened every few days/once or twice a week.
Since the car has had the software update I now get the error almost every time I start the car. Just turning the electrics on, it reads the USB stick fine, you only get the error when you start the engine.
