There is no legal requirement to own a car, you have the right as a consumer to cancel if you no longer feel the company you are with is providing good value. It is not the insurance companies choice that someone on one of their policies decides to change the details on which it is calculated mid term. If only people came on and posted about how when they changed their details they recieved a refund...

Not that I particularly like admiral...charged the other half 8 quid to process a change of address she had keyed herself online.

''No legal requirement to own a car'' - It's virtually impossible not to own one unless you live in the centre of London. Personally that comment is just pointless.

You're right though. People don't sing praises of refunds. I actually had a refund of about £20 when I changed mine, (should have been about £70), but overpriced admin fees and all.

But let's be honest. £400 fee for change of an address is a joke. Quite frankly that is the sort of thing that should be stopped.

Ah so everyones insurance should go up so that those living in higher risk areas can pay less how very fair minded People are quite happy to whinge about things that don't affect them however if I said to you your gonna pay 50 quid more so someone you've never met can pay less what would your first reaction be?

Let's be honest. You're some kind of insurance fan boy. You've already said you were some insurance advisor. Clearly you feel the need to defend insurance companies.

Profits should be capped on something that is a borderline essential. Simple as that. Extortionate admin fees removed... Quite frankly they are up to £50 for a 5min phone call, or £600 an hour in other words.

If you genuinely don't think £400 for an address change is a rip off then you've obviously got too much money.

Yep... Renewed mine last month, no change of address the only difference was an extra year no claims yet they wanted an additional £120 to what I was paying last year because "car crime has gone up in your area".

Play the game and shop around, you will get better rates as a new business customer use them as a negotiation tool or if they refuse to budge vote with your feet. Personally I wouldn't even bother asking why it has gone up, I'd be asking them what they can do to bring it down.

Admin is how they make money, if they sell a policy at a loss which many companies do to get to the top of price comparison sites then the chances are they will have vicious cancellation and admin fees to compensate. Only real way to avoid/mitigate it is actually ask about admin and cancellation at point of purchase as companies that have very little difference in cost may be poles apart in terms of charges. You may well find 20 quid or so more a years gives you half the excess and lower admins but it does take time and effort to sift through.

All sounds like something I was offered from a nice man in Nigeria.

Did you take his offer or tell him where to stick it? It's pretty easy to avoid being fleeced for insurance admin fees, ask the company when you set the policy up what their admin fees are. If you don't like the answer do not insure with them, there are plenty of companies out there and fees vary wildly. If you buy the cheapest possible policy the chances are you will find the company will have other ways of getting money from you.

I seem to of opened a can of worms here!

After speaking to Admiral and a couple of other companies, and also through reading the above comments, I do now understand why it was such an increase.

They massively reduced the increase to change my car to my brand new DS 4 BlueHDi so I'm still happy to stay with them.

Thank you for all your responses!

Don't get anything for loyalty these days (some even charge you to renew your policy), best to become a new customer from a different company as new customers get the biggest discounts. Follow the advice given on http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-insurance don't forget to check cashback sites too.
