  • AJ07 Marshalling Exploits

I signed up this year to become a Marshal with the BMMC and here is my thread to which I will add photos and comment as and when I attend Motor Racing events around the country in my official capacity.

We chatted about this at the Rally and I was meaning to look into it a bit more because it's something I've thought about before. Where/how did you start?

If enough people want a go I can get an initial training day/afternoon at some time or a talk at National 2. I already have the contacts.

Here's a good place to start:

            http://www.marshals.co.uk/

Most circuits run "taster days" during the season, which give you a good idea of what's involved before making a commitment. It's too late for that now, but there are still a few meetings left at which you'd be made very welcome - if you can survive Anglesey in December you'll survive anything the British weather can throw at you! Now's a good time to be thinking about marshalling, as you'll be able to do a training day (most are in January/February) before the start of next season.

(Sorry, AJ, bit of a thread hi-jack )

The people I have been dealing with just need me to get a minimum of seven people to attend a training day. I will ask them again if enough interest

No problem, thanks DaveB. It is just a good way to get involved in the sport and something i have been thinking about for years and should have got involved with a long time ago. I went on a taster day back in May for Historic Car Racing and then the Lotus weekend in July. This was the first full weekend I did and the first time I have been really close to a Formula 1 car. Last seasons car was on the track during the lunch break.

Last weekend I was at the final round of the BTCC and the first weekend in November I will marshaling at the Truck Racing.

We had a busy weekend at the BTCC and some pictures of this will follow. All the training courses held by the BMMC are in January and February.

Here is a taster. I am the one in the Australian Bush hat.

I have attended race meets at Brands Hatch and earlier this year whilst watching the first race at Brands for the BTCC signed on at the Marshals stand and attended my taster day at Brands at the end of May.

It is best to choose a 'home' circuit first. In other words one that it is within a fairly easy drive from home unless you intend to camp or stay at a local hotel. Go for a taster day there before you commit yourself.

Remember it is voluntary and you do not get paid. You get £40 towards the cost of your clothing once you have decided to continue, fee entry to racing, chances to meet the drivers close up and maybe your fuel expenses paid for along with free breakfast.

54 chest cos when you are standing on your feet for upto 10 hours with no heating and exposed to the elements you need to wear plenty of warm clothing underneath, which pads you out and when you first wash it, it will shrink. It is also made of cotton and protected with Proban so it does not melt if you are exposed to fire.

Would love to have done AJ but my business starts up again on the 5th and the roads have changed a bit since I was last around here 26 years ago, lol. So I'll be mainly driving around and around and around and around and.........
