Don't think it works like that Clive. Think the phrase is "normally" ie parked on drive, in garage, on street etc. Doubt they would not pay out just because a car was left outside one night. Same as average mileage per year- its an average. Not 12,000 and if you do 12,300 youre not covered

Its like all this "drive car to and from work, and use for business purposes". It doesn't cost any more with most insurers

I read they see it as a risk of more cosmetic claims from folks scraping side, reversing into wall etc - especially as some are tight fits these days.

Having seen some people park, would not surprise me. at all.

Unfortunately this isn't the case with most. Alot of my mates work for Admiral / Elephant as they have big call centers in Wales, they all say that if you park in a garage the insurance companies take into account the possible damages you could incur driving in / out, damaging the actual garage structure itself (which depending how you go about it would have to be paid for by the car insurance company) and apparently if thieves see a drive with no car but a locked garage they'll try harder to break into the garage and steal the car, 1. as they'll deem it to be a more valuable car and 2. the garage provides cover that they need to stay hidden while they break into / steal the car.

Update this afternoon:


Concrete laid on my side this dinnertime then covered just in time before heavens opened.

Zack, wooden framework is indeed for the concrete base. Will be knocked out when concrete has properly set. Builder says it will be about 2.5-3" thick.

Bins will be behind the garage in front of the wooden fence panel (where they are now). On binday, will just bring through garage back door to the front of the house.

Neighbours concrete is going down either tomorrow or Monday then garages to be erected w/c 14th Oct.

My dad built our garage when he was rebuilding the drive and the garden, It got a separate room in the back and a loft where we keep all the golf and fishing stuff etc. Lengthly job when the weather gets involved mind you! Did find some pretty cool things digging the garden up

Honestly can't believe he's just laid the slab straight on the tarmac. Do you know if he put anything down between the concrete and Tarmac like Visqueen or DPM ?

Seeing as it's a driveway for what looks like a modern housing development I bet you the tarmac is only 50-70mm thick. The slab will be too heavy for the tarmac and will begin to sink and lean, especially during the hot months - too much expanding and contracting on both the concrete and the tarmac will cause it to shift over time, causing cracking and it will begin to rapdily break down. What makes it worse is that there'll be essentially 2 slabs next to each other weighing down that small area of tarmac. The way to do it should have been to rip up the tarmac and put a layer of hardcore / type 1 MOT down. Hope it goes ok for you but I hope he's not charging you much !

He did say he was putting a damp proof membrane down. He also stated when the garage walls are erected then he would be also laying down a waterproof bond between the walls and the concrete base.
