    I guess the answer with hindsight is for someone to open the car for you whilst staying across the street with the keys. That way you don't have the keys anywhere near you when you want something out of the car.
    Bit convoluted but better safe than sorry.

      Technically you did comit the offence.....by the letter of the law...but the police know that they would not have got a prosecution as CPS and the courts look for evidence that you intended to drive and clearly there is none. I guess they were just being thorough in searching your car. It was good advice NOT to drive because you blew on the limit and at that time no-one knew if your level was continuing to rise or fall.
