Decent cameras usually start from about £150. Depends what you want out of it but if it's just a good quality shot, don't spend less than £100.

I suppose part of the trouble is, im completely clueless when it comes to cameras, I have a graphic designer for a brother and its his opinion that a camera isn't worth owning unless it cost you atleast 4 digits.

I drive a Citroen C2, because 95% of the time I am skint. But if someone could point me in the direction of a camera, which wouldn't bankrupt me, but also be worth my time. Id be eternally greatfull

I'd look into buying second hand to start out with.

Try out mpbpgotographic, they are good and have a huge range.

I have never bought a camera brand new or a lens for that matter and I've made some money using them.

Oh and was published in a magazine for the first time recently

Photography is what I did at uni, I've worked professionally in it and now I semi-manage a photographic store and I can tell you that you should completely ignore your brother's opinion.

It depends what you want the camera to do and what sort of things you like taking photos of. Do you want lenses that you can change or something that's more all-in-one?

SLRs with interchangeable lenses start at about £300 new. They'll give you the best quality, in a nutshell. Not much zoom unless you add about another £100 to the cost.

Some people go for bridge cameras because they look like SLRs but all they are are compact cameras with a big zoom. Better ones are usually about £250+.

Compact System Cameras start at about the same price as SLRs but are a lot smaller. Similar image quality but you don't always get a viewfinder and if you do, it'll be an LCD one which won't be great for sports/wildlife. It's newer technology so extra lenses are more expensive.

There are some good compact cameras out there too. The best ones will be £300+ but like I said before, I wouldn't bother with anything under £100.

I've never bought second hand so I'm not sure what you can get for your money right now but the same descriptions apply.

Give me an idea of what type sounds good to you and I can recommend some models.

My two biggest passions in life are Motorbikes and Cars. I go to a lot of car and motorbike shows and would love to be able to take pictures of the cars and bike I like. But that being said I am also the kind of person who quite often goes for random drives to places like the lakes (Mostly Kirkstone and Hartside Pass, my 2 favorite stretches of road) I always see stuff while driving and think "if I had a camera, that would be an awesome picture!" this could be anything from old buildings, streams, water falls, trees and wildlife.

Im not interested in having some ridiculously big camera with interchangeable lenses, but id be more than happy to spend £100 - £200 on something which is relatively compact, id probably take it just about everywhere with me! haha

Oh I have absolutely no doubt about that, but as far as cameras are concerned, I pretty much only know what the person in the shop can tell me about it. And they are always going to recommend the product they will make the most £££ on. As opposed to recommending what camera is best for what you want. Which is why I am hoping you lovely DS3 lot can help

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ35

This is great value for money. A few years ago you would have paid over £500 for a spec like this. I defy anybody on here to say that this camera will not be capable of producing superb pictures.

Years ago I got sucked into the "must have the best" game and ended up spending a fortune on lenses and bodies. Now I have a Canon 550d and a Leica DLUX 4. Most times I don't take the Canon and lenses with me as the Leica has proved to be the better and fits in my pocket.
