  • MPG nowhere near manufactures claims

Just wondering if anyone else has been having this difficulty. Took ownership of my new DS3 1.6 e Hdi Airdream Dstyle Plus a couple of weeks back. Has 300 miles on the clock and the MPG I am getting from the vehicle is nowhere near what the manufacturer claims. I am lucky to get 50MPG from the car when it should be giving me 64.2 on urban 85.6 extra urban and 76.3 combined. Was wondering if I need to give the engine a chance to bed in before expecting these kind of figures? One of the main reasons for getting the car was because I do allot of miles and needed an economical car. My old Honda civic was doing better than this. Help or advice please?

Are you going by the on-board computer or working out by hand by working out litres used?

    Some good tools for you to use;

I have been using the on-board computer to work out MPG. The average of all my journeys to date is 47MPG and the trip computer generally jumps all over the place so does not provide a good method of checking. Next time I fill up with Diesel I will check how many miles I get from my 48l tank and work it out that way. Will let everyone know

          MPG Urban cycle
The urban mpg test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20°C to 30°C on a rolling road from a cold start where the engine has not run for several hours. It is intended to mimic the short car runs that are often performed, e.g. the school run or going to the supermarket. In practically all cases the urban cycle will give the lowest MPG figure.
The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling. Maximum speed is 31 mph , average speed 12 mp and the distance covered is 2.5 miles.
          MPG Extra-urban cycle
The extra-urban mpg cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75 mph , average speed is 39 mph and the distance covered is 4.3.
The extra-urban cycle is intended to mimic the longer journeys which typically include dual carriage way or motorway driving. As the car has been allowed to warm up and spends a good deal of time in the higher gears, the MPG obtained is higher than for the urban cycle.
          MPG Combined Fuel Consumption Figure
The combined figure presented is for the urban and the extra-urban cycle together. It is therefore an average of the two parts of the test, weighted by the distances covered in each part.

In Short - Drive at a constant 39mph for the best Fuel consumption - Yeah right.

          My commute is mostly a-b roads - average 50mph - 95HDI - approx 60MPG.

My HDi90 give me around 52mpg despite regularly thrashed, NEVER expect to get the makers claimed figures, they are calculated under tightly controlled conditions on a rolling road..ie no wind resistance nor traffic or crap road conditions to contend with.
IF I drive sensibly then 60 mpg is easy to achieve.

The officical figures are there to help you compare cars, you'll never get them in the real world because the figures were obtained in controlled laboratory conditions.

I would point you to here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/ but there aren't real numbers listed for the HDi110.

The current mpg reading for my current tank on my eHDI DS3 is 60.0mpg. (That's having used a quarter of a tank and 2,000miles on the engine's life). This has mainly been A road driving with a small amount of town/city driving when I leave from home and get to work (and the other way).

I've only relied on the computer to give me mpg readings so far, but I imagine that they will be completely different if I was to manually calculate them.

It's no way near the claims of 76mpg that Citroen have given, but it's a damn sight better than the 30mpg I was getting in my previous cars, so I'm not going to complain!

What you need to bear in mind when it comes to fuel is that first of all Joeking is correct about the lab test in order to create a control group test for MPG figures and this allows you to compare scores, second is that no two people ever drive the same, weather plays it part and there are subtle differences in load weight from stuff in the boot to the weight of the driver - it all has an effect.

Look at it this way if we all drove the same route in the same car on the same day with the same weather conditions we will all come back with different MPG figures! This tends to also 'mud the waters' when it comes to MPG tables like the one Joeking kindly pointed out where different people post different MPG figures.

MPG figures, unfortunately, is not an exact science the best advice I can give is to look at the Urban Cycle information for a close enough guide to possible MPG that you may return.

I only get around 33 in my 150thp but a lot of it is high speed autobahn that bring the average down.

I could get better but I chose not to and have fun instead.

Probably not relevant to your diesel, but my 120VTi improved by about 2mpg after 6,000 miles or so.

I find the trip computer pretty accurate - usually within 2% or so of the actual consumption. The DS is the first car I've had where the trip computer mpg for a tankful can be lower than my brim-to-brim figure!

I have had 68 from my 90bhp Airdream though normally around 65. Hopefully it will go up once bedded in. Pal at works car took until 30000 to bed in fully and return claimed mpg!
