  • Fast clicking noise from engine/gearbox

    Hi guys,

I have 110hdi. Recently I've noticed that when 'lifting off' in 3rd gear and now 4th, I get a loud clicking noise emanating from the engine/gearbox. It only appears to be in this gear. I asked the citroen mechanic about it on Friday and he said to keep an eye on it, but to be honest I don't don't know how else to describe it.

I managed to capture it on video but is distorted a little by the wind and road noise.

*note, towards the end of the video is where it can be heard most*

Anyone else had this at all?

    Cheers...

Ok I could hear that in your video but I've not experienced that in either of my DS3's I'm assuming you've checked the oil level in the engine and that is ok ?

My only other suggestion would be a loose heat shield or something similar in the engine bay, but you said it only occurs in 3/4 gears so I doubt it's that. Did the mechanic come out and hear it for himself ?

      Thanks for the reply,

Yeah its a bugger of a sound, struggling to trace it...

Braking has no influence on it so i'm thinking I can rule out the brakes as I was starting to suspect warped discs.

Engine bay seems tight, although an inspection today has revealed that a clip on the ECU plastic cover is broken off. I wouldn't imagine that a plastic cover could cause the noise, however it is positioned over the nearside engine mount.
'OIL OK' comes up on the dash and all appears fine on the dipstick.

It is only occurring once the car is warmed up, i.e. after my 40mile trip home I can hear it if I am in 3rd gear. Relly want to get it fixed once my waaranty with the garage runs out as Citroen will have a field day if this develops into something worse...

        New Video added

So today I set out with a sucker mount and used my iPhone 5c to record the noise as my previous video wasn't very good.

I stuck the phone to the front reg plate.

It's clear as day in this video and will now be contacting the dealer and using this as my proof. The oil (black as night after only 3k since last service...) and other fluids are all good, I can't comment on the gearbox oil but assume that is ok too.

Engine sounds a bit rough at the start of the video but not thinking it is a cause for concern...

Here is the video via YouTube:

          Timing belt or tensioner maybe?

Funny you say that, the belt area has been sounding louder recently. Need to get garage to check it over.

            Cheers for the reply.

hi, mine is exactly the same as yours. i watched the video and notice how when you come off accelerator the clicking noise happens. have you had any luck getting yours sorted? im going to book mine in also but it seems to be intermittent. hope you manage to get it fixed, and if you find out the cause please let me know. cheers

Hello, a fellow Daniel with the same car and issue? Coincidence! No way is it a relief but its interesting that someone else has the same issue.

Unfortunatley I've not booked the car in yet, I will do so after my holiday. Its like you say, intermittent which can make it hard for the mechanics to diagnose. I'll use this video as evidence.

I will keep this post update on the progress regarding the issue, but good luck to you also if you get it booked in before me!

Starting to think that its either a broken tooth on the gears or the differential is knackerd? It drives me crazy, if u press the clutch in does it stop? I get a churp for a few seconds also after turning the ignition off like a belt is loose maybe?

I had mine in the at citroen yesturday, they said it was the wind deflectors in my window making the ticking noise when decelerating but i know it isnt them as why would the sound go away when putting the clutch down! So ive been fobbed off there, and as for the churp sound after turning my engine off they said its the egr valve cleaning itself?! Im no mechanic but its not always made that churp noise when the ignotion is turned off so ive been fobbed off again there aswell. 2 weeks warrenty remaining and still feel im getting nowhere!!

Churp is normal on all Hdi is think. Pressing the clutch makes no difference for me, so thats making me think it is not a gearbox/clutch/DMF issue.
