  • Engine Choice - advice needed

    Hello everybody,

I'm considering buying brand new Citroen DS3 with 155 hp thp engine. I'm a bit scared because of all horror stories with that engine. So I'm looking for advice - would you buy 2012 thp? Was the problem with the timing chain fixed? Does it have any other serious problems? I'm an agressive driver so my car will be pushed to the limit quite often (of course I do not floor cold engine or anything like that, i do care about cars). I've never had a car with engine problems so I am very careful with next choice - I am definitely not looking for a first mistake. Is it a better choice to settle for weaker engine 1.6 VTi? Diesel is not an option.

Additional question to owners: Is it possible to fully turn off esp in this car?

ESP can be fully disabled in the THP and should be disabled at all times IMO.

I've not heard of any major issues with the 2012 models, only 2010 to early 2011 so you should be fine

      Welcome to the club

As Fish says, I've not heard of any major issues with the 2012 models.

I have a 2012 THP and have had no issues so far (8 months / 5700 miles).

Best thing to do is test drive both and see which you prefer (hint: it will be the THP).

If you care about performance do not do this.

2011 THP low miles but used hard, lots of high RPM and no problems.

Nothing wrong with the diesel. Have you driven one?

I haven't driven the diesel one but I simply prefer petrol engines. I use my car in the city, often on quite short distances. Diesel is not reaching it optimal working temperature soon enough so I end up driving carefully (cold engine) longer. Plus FAP can be problematic and all diesels (in that kind of price range) have longer throttle reaction times.

            @ Beefmasta

I won't have an oppurtunity to drive the vti. No test drive cars in my area - i live in Poznan, Poland. I've already driven thp and I love it. Performance was great but what astonished me - I didn't know 1.6 liter engine can sound so good! Only thing i worry about is the notorious reliability...

How about oil consumption in the thp? Is there a need to fill up between services?

Thank you all for all the help and sorry for my mistakes in English - it is not my mother tongue.

O and your English is great considering it is your second language.

                .
Not the best, but not horrible.

Again, I can't speak for the 2012 models but I usually have to drop in an extra litre or two before each service.

That's rubbish. Throttle response is excellent, torque is amazing and I spend all day stopping/starting and short journeys with no problems. Diesels have come a long long way since the 70's.

                    @ds3adi

My company car is a Octavia II 2.0 TDI, car that I use everyday since my Clio has been stolen is a 2.0 TDCi Mondeo IV. So i know how modern diesels go but still I prefer petrol engines. That's just me. I know people who wouldn't want to drive petrol cars. I don't think a debate diesel vs petrol will change anything.

About the oil - so I guess a fill up between services will be needed. That is not good but i can live with that.

Regarding the ESP. I like what you're saying that it can be switched off completely. However, both Citreon salesman that I'm talking with claim it will turn itself after reaching 50kph. Is that right? That will be useless when I'll take this care on some serious drive :/

Your salesman is wrong, that only applies to all the other models except the THP. See if you can take it out for a test drive and prove him wrong

                          Correct, from the drivers handbook:
