  • Fuel and fuel gauge

    Hi all
I have had my DS3 since march and the fuel gage has never once registered as being full (it's been back a few times but the service guy seemed to think I was being a pain) Now when I try to put fuel in it lets me put in a little (about £5) then if I take the nozzle out and put it back in it lets me put in a few more £££'s took me 20mins yesterday to put £12 in lol. Was just wondering if anyone else had this problem or any idea what it might be. The garage are not being very helpful

i sometimes have a similar issue with certain fuel pumps constantly cutting off. put the nozzle on as little as you can then try filling up

what happened to me was when filling my tank i did 4-5 clicks after tank was full, so when i switched ignition on it still read about half a tank although it was full.
it would seem if you over fill your tank it gives a false reading.
so what i did was just ran the car watching my miles on the countdown on the display and after a while (days of use) the guage suddenly read 3/4 full
It will correct itself just watch your miles until it does and when you refill tank do NOT go past 3 clicks

I will try that although it is going back to the garage tomorrow as when I filled it up it had only done 44 miles so it seemed to take a lot of fuel for that amount so now I don't know if the tank is broken or the gage lol. The garage seem to think there is nothing wrong with the car but im not convinced:confused:

no it just highlights that if you over fill past 3 clicks it will poss give you a false reading like i did
just let your tank empty as normal and it will possibly correct itself mine did
dont be hasty to replace any parts
just watch your miles from the countdown mileage on your display

Mmmm I need to be more careful then, I think it might be the pumps at Tesco but they shut off some 3 litres or so before the tank is full, more often than not I click then pump 5 or more times to ensure that the tank really is full. No errors on mine yet though

Sounds like your car needs to reset it's self, best advice is to run the car until you get the low fuel light now and then put in about 15 litres (half tank) and run the car again. Once the light comes on again this time fill till the first click and first click only. That should sort the gauge out.

From what I understand and been told petrol/diesel needs the extra space to be able to expand (kind of like a fizzy juice bottle with the air gap at the top), granted most modern tanks and fuel pumps are designed to take the extra pressure but over filling can allow fuel to leak into the vapour line (think that right!) where gas vapours would normally escape and cause damage to the vapour release system.

*Waits for a more technical minded person to fill in the blanks and correct the mistakes

I have my own personal vapour release system!
