First job was to give the car a good clean and remove all of the aftermarket decals.

After inspecting the engine supplied with the car I found that one of the pistons had broken up in two places.

As you can see the bore has two 'nicks' in it.
The maximum permissible bore size is 77.50mm, the standard is 77.00mm.
In this case the cylinder cannot be re-bored to account for the damage.

Some more pictures of the pistons (now I have worked out how to sort the links out).

After a week of searching for engines, this came up on e-bay.
I won the auction and got it at the bargain price of only £240.

As most of you already know, fouling of the intake valves is very common on these engines.
This one has suffered from the same concern.

It wasn't to bad of a job to clean the valves up.

I scraped most of it off using a plastic tool.
The valves were put in a drill and spun up, I held a scourer sponge (soaked in WD40) over the carbon deposits.
The result was some nice clean valves.
