After inspecting the engine supplied with the car I found that one of the pistons had broken up in two places.

As you can see the bore has two 'nicks' in it.
The maximum permissible bore size is 77.50mm, the standard is 77.00mm.
In this case the cylinder cannot be re-bored to account for the damage.

It wasn't to bad of a job to clean the valves up.
I scraped most of it off using a plastic tool.
The valves were put in a drill and spun up, I held a scourer sponge (soaked in WD40) over the carbon deposits.
The result was some nice clean valves.
